Utility, Informativity and Protocols

چکیده

Recently, quantitative notions of relevance have been proposed for questions and assertions and, based on an assumption of optimal relevance, used for linguistic applications. BarHillel and Carnap’s (1953) notion of informativity (their ‘inf’ value) has already been used in traditional pragmatics of natural language; Merin (1999a,b) proposes that the relevance of a proposition q should be seen as argumentative value with respect to an hypothesis h and measured by Good’s (1950) notion of the weight of evidence, log P (h/q) P (¬h/q) ; and van Rooy (1999,2001b) measures the utility of interpretations of questions and answers in terms of the value of sample information and the reduction of entropy. These measures are used to determine what is actually expressed by an expression with an underspecified semantic meaning, and to account for certain pragmatic inferences, especially conversational implicatures (e.g. Parikh, 1992; Merin, 1999b; van Rooy, 2001b, and Schulz, 2002). In an inspiring paper, Bernardo (1979) showed that the expected informational value of an experiment/question is the natural special case of its expected utility value. The first contribution of this paper is to extend this investigation in several ways. The second contribution is to measure the relevance/utility of non-partitional questions, and show how different proposals (using either protocols or likelihood functions) come down to the same thing.

Learning by Doing: Understanding the Role of Affordance Informativity in Information Search Performance

Information search is becoming increasingly demanding due to the booming of Consumer Generated Content (CGC) in online environment. This has led to growing scholarly interest in designing search features to accommodate diverse user preferences. Drawing on the Theory of Affordance Informativity, we advance ostensive informativity and performative informativity as focal mechanisms for search feat...

Using Information Content to Predict Phone Deletion

Different languages present us with rather different likelihoods of deleting consonants. The very common deletion processes that target /t/ and /d/ in various English dialects have been discussed in detail in linguistic research, but English does not exhibit other well-known phonological processes such as /s/ deletion, a process that is very common in a number of Romance languages. A curious li...

Probing Interactivity in Open Data for General Practice. An Evidence-Based Approach

We undertook a user study to evaluate whether the perceived utility of some common open data sets for family doctors would increase if they are rendered in interactive heat maps. We also investigated whether Parallel Coordinates (PC) are perceived as a convenient diagram to summarize multiple patients data; and whether making PCs interactive would increase their informativity. We interviewed 29...

Talking with tact: Polite language as a balance between kindness and informativity

Conveying information in a false or indirect manner in consideration of listeners’ wants (i.e. being polite) seemingly contradicts an important goal of a cooperative speaker: information transfer. We propose that a cooperative speaker considers both epistemic utility, or utility of providing the listener new and accurate information, and social utility, or utility of maintaining or boosting the...

Automatic Thesaurus Generation using Co-occurrence

This paper proposes a characterization of useful thesaurus terms by the informativity of cooccurence with that term. Given a corpus of documents, informativity is formalized as the information gain of the weighted average term distribution of all documents containing that term. While the resulting algorithm for thesaurus generation is unsupervised, we find that high informativity terms correspo...
